Seanad Election 2016 : Crèche, Retirement Home or an Upper House to be proud of ? Let the people decide

As the  Seanad Election 2016 approaches, the question has to be asked ‘does party politics serve the people or the party’.  The fallout from the General Election 2016 has resulted in many high profile TDs losing their seats and the challenge for   political parties now is how to enhance the profile of those who lost so that they are ready for the next general election whenever that comes. The people of Ireland decided by way of a referendum to retain the Seanad in 2013.  However, I doubt that anyone voting in that referendum wanted the Seanad to continue as the old boy’s staging post that it has become since 1937.

Isn't it time we reformed the Seanad ?

Now that the General Election is over, I am asking the people of Ireland to start a conversation about real reform of the Seanad so it is now longer a resting place for those who did not get elected to the Dáil. There is no provision in Legislation for the Seanad to be divided along political lines, there should be no Government and opposition sides. There there should be real democracy. Let's get this conversation started today!

Latest Opportunity for Seanad Reform

As the closing date for the receipt of submissions to the Working Group on Seanad Reform fast approaches I am asking on everyone who wisely voted in favour of retaining the Seanad to have their say. While the Working Group did place ads in National Newspapers before Christmas inviting submissions, the subject has been all but been ignored by the National Media. Two weeks ago I drafted an opinion piece for circulation to all the Newspapers but interest in Seanad Reform appears to have waned if not died away altogether. Even though last year’s Seanad Referendum did not allow for a vote on the reform of the Seanad it is widely known that many of those who voted in favour or perhaps indeed against the retention of the Seanad are in favour of radical reform.
